The events of Avatar: The Game are set a few years before the events of the film, and stay incredibly consistent to the story. A short way into the game, you are forced to make a decision when you discover another Avatar, one of your colleagues, has betrayed humanity and sided with the Na’avi, a ten-foot tall, blue skinned race native to the moon Pandora. You must side with either the humans (in which case your Avatar, a being made of a combination of human and Na’avi DNA, dies in a cutscene, keeping you in your human body) or the Na’avi (in which case your organization “terminates” you, but not before a Na’avi mystic transfers your soul into your Avatar.)

The Na’avi are at war with humans (whom they call “the sky people” for the aircraft they pilot) to protect the great Hometree, under which is found a mass deposit of an absurdly valuable metal called unobtanium. But the head of a human organization called the RDA will stop at nothing to get its hands on the Hometree’s riches, and he has a plan to go to the top of power- and kill the Na’avi’s greatest hopes, by destroying their Goddess Eywah.

8.5

Presentation
Overall, the world looks amazing, and I especially love the “Pandora-Pedia,” a guide to everything Avatar, from the history and culture of the Na’avi, to info on major characters and plot points, to the mock science articles on the various flora and fauna.

10

Graphics

This game simply looks amazing. The graphics are amazingly high-detail, and really put you in the world of Pandora.

8.5

Sound
Good. The music instantly sets the feel of each environment and the current situation, and the voice acting is excellent, though a little irritating during combat when enemies you just killed scream, “There he is!”

6.0

Gameplay
The actual play is a little lackluster. The various weapons and enemies are fun at first, but nothing special. I soon grew weary of fighting the same enemy over and over who I’m supposed to be convinced is different because their fur is a different color. Plus abundant revives found nearly everywhere take all challenge away.

3.0

Lasting Appeal

Minimal. The game is fun at first, when a new weapon or enemy is always around the bend, but as the tale enters a halfway point, the inflow of new items and enemies come to an abrupt halt. You also inevitably are caught in a loop of large scale fetch-quest missions, which irritates all but the most patient. A side game “Conquest” reminds me of Risk, and is a nice distraction.

 6.5

OVERALL
If you loved the film, and you happen to meet the requirements, as far as movie licensed games go, you could do worse.
